Fort Leonard Wood is a United States Army training installation situated in the Missouri Ozarks. The main gate of the post is located on the southern boundary of the city of St. Robert. It was established in December 1940 and officially named in January 1941 to honor General Leonard Wood.
Originally intended for infantry troop training, the facility transitioned into an engineer training post in 1941 with the establishment of the Engineer Replacement Training Center. During World War II, the fort served as an internment site for German and Italian prisoners of war. In 1984, most operations of the U.S. Army Engineer School were consolidated at Fort Leonard Wood as part of the Base Realignment and Closure process, moving from its previous location at Fort Belvoir, Virginia.
