Montevideo is the capital and largest city of Uruguay. It is located on the southern coast of the country along the northeastern bank of the Río de la Plata.
As of the 2023 census, the city proper has a population of 1,287,452 residents, which accounts for approximately 36.8% of Uruguay's total population. The city covers an area of 201 square kilometers (78 sq mi).
