Caledonia is a historical name used by the Roman Empire to describe the forested region located in the central and western Scottish Highlands. This territory encompassed areas that currently include Lochaber, Badenoch, and Strathspey, potentially extending as far south as Rannoch Moor. To the native Brython people, the region was known as Coed Celedon.
During the Roman occupation of Britain, Caledonia remained outside the administration of Roman Britain and was physically separated from the rest of the island by the Antonine Wall. In modern usage, the name is primarily employed as a romantic or poetic designation for all of Scotland.
