Hastings is a seaside town and borough located in East Sussex on the south coast of England. It is situated approximately 24 miles east of Lewes and 53 miles southeast of London. As of 2021, the town had an estimated population of 91,100.
The town derives its name from the Battle of Hastings, which occurred in 1066 at Senlac Hill, located about 8 miles to the northwest. Historically, Hastings became one of the medieval Cinque Ports and developed into a popular seaside resort during the 19th century following the arrival of the railway.
Today, Hastings continues to serve as a prominent seaside resort and a significant fishing port. It is home to the United Kingdom's largest beach-based fishing fleet.
