As of the 2020 census, the city had a total population of 52,731 and serves as the principal city of the Battle Creek metropolitan statistical area.
The city is widely known by the nickname "Cereal City" due to its historical significance in the food industry. It is the home of WK Kellogg Co and was the founding city of Post Consumer Brands. Notably, the Kellogg brothers invented the first cereal by accident while attempting to make granola in Battle Creek.
