Skowhegan is a town located in Somerset County, Maine, in the United States. It serves as the county seat and had a population of 8,620 according to the 2020 census. The town also contains a census-designated place of the same name.
The area was originally inhabited by the indigenous Abenaki people, who named Skowhegan "watching place [for fish]" before being mostly dispersed by the end of the 4th Anglo-Abenaki War. Today, the town is notable for hosting the annual Skowhegan State Fair every August, which is recognized as the oldest continuously held state fair in the United States.
