Takoma Park is a city located in Montgomery County, Maryland, within the Washington metropolitan area. Situated just northeast of Washington, D.C., it serves as a suburb of the nation's capital and shares a border and history with the adjacent neighborhood of Takoma. The city was founded in 1883 and officially incorporated in 1890.
Originally developed as a planned commuter suburb along the Metropolitan Branch of the historic Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, the city is informally known as "Azalea City." It holds the designations of a Tree City USA and a nuclear-free zone. The local government operates under a council-manager style, consisting of an elected mayor, six elected councilmembers, and an appointed city manager.
According to the 2020 United States census, Takoma Park had a population of 17,629 residents.
