Ilchester is a village and civil parish located in the county of Somerset, England. It is situated on the River Yeo, also known as the Ivel, approximately five miles north of Yeovil.
The settlement has a long history, originating as a Roman town before becoming a market town. During the 12th and 13th centuries, Ilchester served as a notable settlement and was effectively the county town of Somerset. However, its size and importance declined by the beginning of the 18th century, with the final markets held in 1833. The historic corporation that governed the town was eventually dissolved in 1889.
