A green belt, also known as a greenbelt, is a land-use policy and zone designation used in urban planning. Its primary purpose is to preserve areas of undeveloped, wild, or agricultural land that surround or neighbor urban centers.
These zones act as invisible borders that prevent development within the designated area, allowing wildlife to return and establish themselves. While green belts typically encircle an urban area, similar concepts include greenways or green wedges, which possess a linear character and may pass through an urban area instead of around it.
