Baltimore, also known as Baltimore City, is the most populous city in the U.S. state of Maryland. It was designated as an independent city by the Constitution of Maryland in 1851 and does not fall under the jurisdiction of any county within the state. The city is situated in the Central Maryland region alongside the surrounding Baltimore County.
According to the 2020 census, the city had a population of 585,708, with an estimate of 569,997 for 2025. It ranks as the 30th-most populous city in the United States. The Baltimore metropolitan area, which has 2.86 million residents, is the 22nd-largest metropolitan area in the nation and is part of the Washington–Baltimore combined statistical area.
