South Boston is a densely populated neighborhood located in the city of Boston, Massachusetts, in the United States. It is situated south and east of the Fort Point Channel and abuts Dorchester Bay.
The area was annexed to the city of Boston in 1804 and has undergone several demographic transformations since that time. Originally consisting primarily of farmland, the neighborhood became widely recognized during the twentieth century as a working-class Irish Catholic community. In the twenty-first century, South Boston has seen further change as it has become increasingly popular with millennial professionals.
