Jamaica Plain is a neighborhood located in Boston, Massachusetts, in the United States. It covers an area of approximately 4.4 square miles (11 km2). Originally settled by Puritans looking for farmland to the south, the area was initially part of Roxbury.
The community seceded from Roxbury during the formation of West Roxbury in 1851 and was subsequently annexed into Boston in 1874. During the 19th century, Jamaica Plain developed as one of the first streetcar suburbs in the United States.
The neighborhood is notable for hosting a significant portion of Boston's Emerald Necklace of parks. These public spaces were designed by the renowned landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted.
