Cambridge is a city and non-metropolitan district located in the county of Cambridgeshire, England. It serves as the county town of Cambridgeshire and is situated on the River Cam, approximately 55 miles (89 km) north of London. According to the 2021 United Kingdom census, the population of the city was 145,700, while the wider built-up area reached a population of 181,137.
The region contains archaeological evidence of settlement dating back as far as the Bronze Age. Historically, Cambridge developed into an important trading center during both the Roman and Viking eras. While the first town charters were granted in the 12th century, the city did not officially receive its modern city status until 1951.
