Chalmette is a census-designated place (CDP) located in southeastern Louisiana, United States. It serves as the parish seat of St. Bernard Parish and is situated east of downtown New Orleans and south of Arabi, positioned toward Lake Borgne. The community is part of the larger New Orleans–Metairie–Kenner metropolitan statistical area.
The population of Chalmette has fluctuated significantly in recent decades. According to census data, the population was 32,069 in 2000 but dropped to 17,119 by 2011 following Hurricane Katrina. By the 2020 U.S. Census, the population had rebounded to 21,562.
