Alexandria is a major city located in Egypt at the western edge of the Nile River Delta. It extends approximately 40 km (25 mi) along the country's northern coast and serves as Egypt's principal seaport.
As the second largest city in Egypt after Cairo, it is also the largest city on the Mediterranean coast. Founded in 331 BC by Alexander the Great, the city was one of the most important urban centers of antiquity and served as a prominent hub for science, culture, and scholarship.
