The Mount of Olives, also known as Mount Olivet, is a mountain ridge located in East Jerusalem, Palestine. It sits east of and adjacent to the Old City of Jerusalem. The site derives its name from the olive groves that historically covered its slopes.
The mount holds significant historical and religious importance, particularly regarding burial traditions. Its western slopes have served as a Jewish cemetery for more than 3,000 years and contain approximately 150,000 graves. The southern portion of the ridge was formerly the Silwan necropolis, which is attributed to the elite of the ancient Kingdom of Judah. Atop the hill is the Palestinian neighborhood of At-Tur, a former village that is currently part of East Jerusalem.
