South Holland is a province located in the western part of the Netherlands along the North Sea. It serves as the country's most populous province, with a population exceeding 3.8 million as of January 2023. The region is characterized by high population density and contains significant water bodies, with approximately 609 km2 of its total area consisting of water.
The province borders North Holland to the north, Utrecht and Gelderland to the east, and North Brabant and Zeeland to the south. The Rhine-Meuse-Scheldt delta drains through this region into the North Sea. South Holland is home to the Dutch seat of government, The Hague, which serves as the provincial capital, as well as Rotterdam, which is the province's largest city.
One of the most notable features of South Holland is the Port of Rotterdam. Located within the province, it is recognized as Europe's busiest seaport.
