A savanna, also spelled savannah, is a mixed woodland-grassland biome and ecosystem found in various regions of the world. It is primarily characterized by an open canopy structure where trees are spaced sufficiently wide to allow sunlight to reach the ground. This light availability supports a continuous layer of herbaceous vegetation, which consists mainly of grasses.
There are four distinct forms of savanna identified based on their vegetation density. These include savanna woodland, featuring a light canopy of trees and shrubs; tree savanna, characterized by scattered trees and shrubs; shrub savanna, where shrubs are the distributed primary vegetation; and grass savanna, in which trees and shrubs are mostly nonexistent.
