The Seminole are a Native American people who originated in Florida during the 18th century. They emerged through a process of ethnogenesis involving various Native American groups that settled in Spanish Florida starting in the early 1700s, most notably northern Muscogee Creeks from present-day Georgia and Alabama.
Today, the Seminole people reside primarily in Oklahoma and Florida. They comprise three federally recognized tribes: the Seminole Nation of Oklahoma, the Seminole Tribe of Florida, and the Miccosukee Tribe of Indians of Florida, alongside several independent groups.
