Fontainebleau is a commune located in the metropolitan area of Paris, France. It is situated approximately 55.5 kilometres (34.5 mi) south-southeast of the center of Paris and serves as the seat of the arrondissement of Fontainebleau.
The commune is a sub-prefecture of the Seine-et-Marne department and is located near the prefecture of Melun. Notably, Fontainebleau has the largest land area in the Île-de-France region, making it the only commune to cover a larger area than Paris itself.
