Sylmar is a suburban neighborhood located in the San Fernando Valley. It serves as the northernmost neighborhood within the city of Los Angeles, California, in the United States.
The area was historically characterized by its extensive olive orchards, a tradition dating back to the 18th century and the founding of the San Fernando Mission. Systematic production of olives began in the region in 1890. Due to its favorable climate, which was considered healthy, Sylmar also became a site for medical facilities, hosting a sanitarium that served as the first in a series of hospitals in the neighborhood.
The community currently includes fourteen public schools and eight private schools.
