South Lake Tahoe is a city located in the Sierra Nevada mountains of California, United States. It serves as the most populous city in El Dorado County, with a population recorded at 21,330 during the 2020 census. The city extends approximately five miles west-southwest along U.S. Route 50, which is also known as Lake Tahoe Boulevard.
The geography of the city is divided by its primary functions; the western end is predominantly residential and centers around "The Y," the intersection of U.S. Route 50, State Route 89, and Lake Tahoe Boulevard. In contrast, the eastern end sits along the California–Nevada state line adjacent to Stateline, Nevada. This area is primarily oriented toward tourism and features various hotels, restaurants, and the Heavenly Mountain Resort.
