El Cajon is a city located in San Diego County, California, in the United States. It is situated approximately 17 miles (27 kilometers) east of downtown San Diego.
The city derives its name from Rancho El Cajón, which was named for the box-like shape of the valley surrounding the area. Because of this geography, "the Box" is a common nickname for the city.
