Alturas is the only incorporated city in Modoc County, California, United States. It serves as the county seat and is situated in the Shasta Cascade region of Northern California at an elevation of 4,370 feet (1,330 m). The city is located east of the center of Modoc County at the confluence of the north and south forks of the Pit River.
As one of the largest cities in the region, Alturas functions as a local economic hub. According to the 2020 census, the city had a population of 2,715 residents.
