Lviv is a major city in western Ukraine and serves as the administrative center for both Lviv Oblast and Lviv Raion. It is the fifth-largest city in the country, with a population of 723,403, and functions as one of Ukraine's primary cultural centers.
The city was named after Leo I of Galicia, who was the eldest son of Daniel, King of Ruthenia. Throughout its history, Lviv has been known by several different names.
