Mariupol is a city located in the Donetsk Oblast of Ukraine. It is situated on the northern coast of the Sea of Azov, specifically in the Pryazovia region, at the mouth of the Kalmius River.
Prior to the Russian invasion of Ukraine in January 2022, Mariupol was the second-largest city in Donetsk Oblast and ranked as the tenth-largest city in the country. At that time, its estimated population was 425,681; however, by August 2023, Ukrainian authorities estimated the population to be approximately 120,000.
