Donetsk is an industrial city located in eastern Ukraine on the Kalmius River in the Donetsk Oblast. Historically, the city has been known by several names, including Aleksandrovka, Yuzivka, Stalin, and Stalino. According to the 2001 census, it was ranked as the fifth-largest city in Ukraine.

The city's population was estimated at 901,645 within the city core in 2011, with a total metropolitan area exceeding 2 million people. Currently, Donetsk is occupied by Russia and serves as the capital of the Donetsk People's Republic.
