Bakhmut is a city located in eastern Ukraine within the Donetsk Oblast. It serves as the administrative center for both the Bakhmut Raion and the Bakhmut urban hromada. The city is situated on the Bakhmutka River, approximately 90 kilometres north of Donetsk, which is the administrative center of the oblast.
Historically, Bakhmut held the status of a city of regional significance until that designation was abolished in 2020. As of January 2022, the city had an estimated population of 71,094 residents.
