Chernivtsi is a city located in southwestern Ukraine on the upper course of the Prut River. It serves as the administrative center for the Chernivtsi urban hromada, the Chernivtsi Raion, and the Chernivtsi Oblast.
The city was formerly the capital of the historic region of Bukovina, which is currently divided between Romania and Ukraine. As of recent data, the population of Chernivtsi is 264,298, following a 2001 census that recorded 240,600 residents.
