Nungwi, also known as Ras Nungwi, is a large village situated at the northern end of the island of Zanzibar in Tanzania. It is located within the Nungwi Ward of the Kaskazini A District in the Unguja North Region. With a population of 30,762, it stands as the second largest settlement on the island and is positioned approximately 35 miles (56 km) north of Zanzibar Town.
Historically recognized as a fishing village and a center for dhow-building, Nungwi has evolved into a prominent tourist destination. The western portion of the village has seen significant development since the 1990s, featuring numerous resorts, restaurants, bars, and stores, while the eastern side remains quieter and more laid-back. The area gained international recognition in 2014 when it was included in CNN’s list of the "100 best beaches of the world."
