Dodoma, officially Dodoma City, is the capital city of Tanzania. Located within the Dodoma Region, it serves as the administrative seat for both the local municipal council and the surrounding region. As of July 2024, the city surpassed Arusha to become the third largest city in Tanzania based on both population and infrastructure measures.
The Tanzanian government announced the relocation of the national capital from Dar es Salaam to Dodoma in 1974 for social and economic reasons aimed at centralizing the seat of government within the country. Dodoma officially became the nation's capital in 1996. The city has a population of 765,179 as of 2022, with projections indicating it will reach 1,000,000 by the end of 2026.
