Bagamoyo is a historic coastal town located in the Pwani Region of Tanzania. It serves as the capital of the Bagamoyo District and is situated on the coast of the Zanzibar Channel, approximately 75 kilometres north of Dar-es-Salaam across from the island of Zanzibar.
The settlement was founded at the end of the 18th century as an extension of the older Swahili settlement of Kaole. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, it served as a primary trading port for German interests along the East African coast and was designated as the capital of German East Africa by the colonial administration.
The town is recognized as a National Historic Site of Tanzania, specifically known as Bagamoyo Historic Town. As of 2011, the population of the town was recorded at 82,578 inhabitants.
