Yubu, translated as Pace(s) of Yu or Step(s) of Yu, is a basic mystic dance step used in religious Daoism. This ancient walking or dancing technique typically involves the practitioner dragging one foot after another. The practice is explained in reference to the legendary figure Yu the Great, who reportedly became lame on one side of his body from the physical exertion required to establish order in the world following the Great Flood.
Daoist religions incorporated Yubu into various rituals as early as the Six Dynasties period (220–589). A notable example is Bugang, or "pace the Big Dipper," a ritual in which a Taoist priest symbolically walks the nine stars of the Beidou constellation. This specific movement is performed to acquire the supernatural energy associated with that constellation.
