Hsinchu, officially known as Hsinchu City, is a coastal city located in northwestern Taiwan. It borders the Taiwan Strait to the west, Hsinchu County to the north and east, and Miaoli County to the south.
The city is notable for being the most populous city in Taiwan that does not hold special municipality status, with an estimated population of 476,273 inhabitants. It is commonly nicknamed the Windy City due to the strong northeastern monsoon winds that occur during the autumn and winter seasons.
