The Whim is a play written by Eglantine Wallace in 1795. Although it was intended to be performed for the benefit of the hospital and poor of the Isle of Thanet, it was never staged due to being banned under the Licensing Act 1737.
The work was published in its original year with a subtitle expressing indignation over the "arbitrary and unjust aspersion" made by the licenser against the play's political sentiments. It subsequently entered a second edition following this refusal of the Royal Licence.
