Kars is a city located in northeast Turkey and serves as the seat of both Kars Province and Kars District. As of 2022, the city had a population of 91,450. It is currently governed by Mayor Ötüken Senger.
Historically, the city was situated in the ancient region of Chorzene within the province of Ayrarat in the Kingdom of Armenia. From 929 to 961, it served as the capital of the Bagratid Kingdom of Armenia. While the city had an Armenian ethnic majority for much of its history, it was recaptured by Turkish nationalist forces in late 1920.
