Konya is a major city located in central Turkey on the southwestern edge of the Central Anatolian Plateau. It serves as the capital of Konya Province.
Historically known as Iconium during antiquity and into Seljuk times, the city was the capital of the Seljuk Turks' Sultanate of Rum during the late medieval period. In 19th-century English accounts, the city was commonly referred to by the spellings Konia or Koniah.
In the modern era, Konya is recognized as the spiritual center of the Mevlevi Order, which is well known for its Whirling Dervishes.
