Kazan is the capital and largest city of Tatarstan, a federal subject of Russia. It is situated at the confluence of the Volga and Kazanka rivers, covering a total area of 425.3 square kilometres.

The city serves as the most populous urban center on the Volga River and is located within the Volga Federal District. With a population exceeding 1.3 million residents—and up to nearly 2 million in its greater metropolitan area—Kazan ranks as the fifth-largest city in Russia.
