Tunceli is a municipality located in the Tunceli District and serves as the capital of the Tunceli Province in Turkey. As of 2021, the city had a recorded population of 35,161 residents.
The region is characterized by a Kurdish majority. The population is predominantly composed of Kurdish Alevis, an ethno-religious community whose identity has been influenced by a historical background of autonomy and resistance to central state authority.
