Trabzon is a city located on the Black Sea coast in northeastern Turkey. It serves as the capital of Trabzon Province and was historically known by the name Trebizond.
The city was founded in 756 BC as Trapezous by Greek colonists from Miletus. Throughout its history, it was incorporated into the Achaemenid Empire by Cyrus the Great and served as a significant location within the independent Kingdom of Pontus until 68 BC. Following these periods, the city became part of the Roman and later Byzantine Empires.
After the Fourth Crusade in 1204, Trabzon became the capital of the Empire of Trebizond, which was one of the successor states of the Byzantine Empire. The city eventually came under Ottoman rule in 1461.
