Harput, also known as Kharberd, is an ancient town located in the Elazığ Province of Turkey. It currently functions as a small district of the city of Elazığ and is situated approximately 1,100 kilometres (700 mi) from Istanbul. Historically, during the late Ottoman period, the town fell under the jurisdiction of the Mamuret-ul-Aziz Vilayet.
The area possesses significant historical depth, with artifacts dating back to around 2000 BC being discovered in the region. Harput is notably characterized by its architectural and geological landmarks, including the Harput Castle, several old mosques, a church, and the Buzluk (Ice) Cave. The town also incorporates a museum.
