Edirne is a city located in the northwestern part of the province of Edirne in Eastern Thrace, Turkey. It is situated in close proximity to international borders, specifically 7 km (4.3 mi) from Greece and 20 km (12 mi) from Bulgaria.
Historically known by various names including Orestias, Orestiada, Adrianople, or Adriana, the city served as a significant administrative center. It was the second capital of the Ottoman Empire from the 1360s until 1453, prior to the establishment of Constantinople as the capital.
