Amasya is a city located in northern Turkey within the Black Sea Region. It serves as the seat of both Amasya Province and Amasya District, with a recorded population of 114,921 as of 2021. Historically known as Amaseia or Amasia in antiquity, the city is situated in a narrow valley along the banks of the Yeşilırmak (Iris) River.
The city is positioned in the mountains above the Black Sea coast, set apart from the rest of Anatolia. Due to its high elevation and inland climate, the region is well-suited for growing apples, a crop for which Amasya province is famous. The area possesses a history spanning 7,500 years, with numerous historical traces still visible today.
Amasya has been home to notable figures, including the geographer Strabo and the 15th-century Armenian scholar and physician Amirdovlat Amasiatsi.
