Sfax is a major port city located in Tunisia, situated approximately 270 km (170 mi) southeast of the capital, Tunis. Founded in AD 849 on the ruins of Taparura, it serves as the capital of the Sfax Governorate and stands as the second-most populous city in the country. The city has a population of 341,999.

The local economy is primarily driven by international trade and several key industries. These include phosphate production, fishing, and the processing of olives and nuts. As a Mediterranean port, it remains a significant hub for commerce within the region.
