Bizerte, also known as Bizerta, is the capital and largest city of the Bizerte Governorate in northern Tunisia. Situated approximately 65 km (40 mi) north of the national capital, Tunis, it holds the distinction of being the northernmost city in Africa.
The city is historically significant for being the last town to remain under French control after the rest of Tunisia gained its independence from France. As of 2014, the population of Bizerte was recorded at 162,053 inhabitants.
