Kairouan, also spelled Kairwan or El Qayrawān, is the capital of the Kairouan Governorate in Tunisia. It is designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and serves as a significant historical location within the region.
Founded by the Umayyads around 670 during the period of Caliph Mu'awiya, the city became an important center for Quranic learning and Sunni Islamic scholarship.
