Vahdat is a city located in western Tajikistan on the bank of the Kofarnihon River. It is situated approximately 21 km east of the capital city, Dushanbe. The settlement has undergone several name changes throughout its history, having been known as Yangi-Bozor from 1927 to 1936, Orjonikidzeobod and Kofarnihon between 1993 and 2006, and finally renamed Vahdat in the 2000s.
As of 2020, the population of the city proper is estimated at 43,200, while the total population including outlying communities reaches approximately 342,700. The city gained significant international attention in 2019 following a major riot at its prison. The incident, which was believed to have been instigated by members of the Islamic State, resulted in the deaths of three guards and 29 inmates.
