Rasht is a city located in the Central District of Rasht County within the Gilan province of Iran. It serves as the capital for the province, the county, and the district. As of 2016, the city had a population of 679,995, making it the most populous city in northern Iran.
The city is known by the nickname "City of Silver Rain" and has historically functioned as a border city. Due to this role, it earned the historical moniker "Dār al-Marz Rasht," which translates to "Rasht on the Border."
