Panjakent, also known as Penjikent, is a city located in the Sughd province of western Tajikistan. Situated along the Zeravshan River, the city has a current population of approximately 52,500 residents.
The area served as an ancient town within the historical region of Sogdiana. The ruins of this old settlement are preserved on the outskirts of the modern city. Additionally, the Sarazm Important Bird Area is located downstream from Panjakent on the tugay-vegetated floodplain of the river.
