Pathum Wan is one of the fifty districts (khet) located in Bangkok, Thailand. Covering an area of 8.37 square kilometres (3.23 sq mi), it was officially established in 1915. The district lies just beyond the old city boundary of Khlong Phadung Krung Kasem and was originally a rural area on the eastern outskirts of the city before royal villas were constructed there during the late nineteenth century.
The district is characterized by significant educational, recreational, and commercial landmarks. A large portion of its land is occupied by the campus of Chulalongkorn University, as well as the green spaces of Lumphini Park and the Royal Bangkok Sports Club. By the turn of the 20th–21st centuries, Pathum Wan became a primary city centre known for prominent shopping areas such as Siam and Ratchaprasong.
